Stimulating Minds and Building Community
Welcome to American Passage! American Passage is a 501c 3 organization based in the New York City / New York tri-state area that provides transliteracy services and creates specialized learning opportunities. Through active engagement and intellectual stimulation, American Passage inspires those with Alzheimer's / dementia and public-school students to collaborate, connect, engage and explore.
Professional information fluency specialists take a keen interest in connecting the vulnerable populations and communities through e-learning, accountable talk and empowering learning opportunities in order to prepare future ready citizens to contribute to the greater good. In our most recent project, students utilize virtual reality to create new environments and places to virtually visit for those afflicted with Alzheimer's or dementia residents of facilities. Though many elderly are confined, or wheelchair bound, with virtual reality headsets and the students' hard work and innovation, they will be able to virtually tour different countries and explore. Additionally, other services help public school children improve their reading and comprehension through special student service-learning opportunities that directly impact Alzheimer and dementia elderly. In the past, students have created unique books for the visually impaired with braille and tactile pictures, which are donated to a NYC school for visually impaired. Public school students assist in literacy services to the elderly, as effective programming is essential in keeping the mind alert.
Seeking to foster greater intellectual and mental stimulation, this programming actively engages participants. With over 22 years experience teaching and working with inner-city at-risk learners, program leaders created working partnerships for scholars to learn, become contributing citizens and support the visually impaired and stimulate the elderly. These win-win learning opportunities make everyone feel alive and connected to today's world. Programming and services can be tailored to accommodate various learning situations and populations.
